Finished Basements: Get Someone Else to Get the Work Done

When you are looking for a home, there are many things to worry about. One of those things that might not be your biggest concern is the kind of basement you want. Do you want to get a home with a finished basement, or would it be a better choice to have a home with the basement in an unfinished condition and do the work yourself? For homes that do not have basements at all, you might consider the points outlined in this article as they relate to any unfinished spaces in a home you might be considering, such as bonus rooms or large unfinished attics.

The biggest thing to consider is that the job of finishing an unfinished space in a home can be surprisingly pricey. You are not very likely to get back your cost when you sell your real estate. In fact, paying to finish a basement will only get you about 75% return when the house is sold. In other words, it is not a good deal to look for a house with the basement not completed and plan to do the work yourself.

So, when you are looking for a home, it's economically advantageous to find a house that already has the basement finished. It's the other side of the same coin that says it doesn't pay for the seller to spend make the investment on the job. When you are the buyer, you are in a position to get the upper hand in that aspect of the transaction.

In addition to saving yourself cost and the hassle of doing the project, there are other reasons for choosing a home with the basement work already completed. Basements that are not in use can tend to get damp and moldy. They tend to turn into unpleasant places, and can become health hazards.

Basements tend to remain stable in terms of temperature. They tend to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer, which means that you'll spend less on heating and air conditioning if you spend time hanging out downstairs and compensate a little by relaxing the heating or cooling of the other, less-used, parts of the house. The extra living space added to the house by a finished basement can be a real bonus in taking advantage of the home to facilitate your at-home lifestyle. Gone are the days when basements were only used to store things. A well finished basement can be turned into additional bedrooms, a rec room, a hobby room, a large living room, or whatever else complements your needs.

If you live in an area where tormadoes or other severe weather might possibly occur -- that is to say, just about anywhere -- basements can be a good place to take refuge from an approaching storm. The need to go downstairs with a storm in the vicinity can be frightening. A comfortable and familiar atmosphere can help ease anxieties and make it better for the whole family.

So when you buy your next piece of real estate, do yourself a favor and look for a home with a finished basement. Take advantage of someone else having done the work, and you can enjoy the fruits of their labor.
